In 1976, the founders of Africa Re, namely the member States of the Organisation of African Unity (now the African Union) and the African Development Bank, envisioned a pan-African reinsurance entity to support Africa's economic and social advancement and help prevent capital flight to overseas markets.
“Thanks to the dedication and the hard work of successive generations of leadership and staff that have remained true to its founding vision, fifty years on, Africa Re today has evolved into a globally respected institution, defined by its financial strength, technical excellence, and a deep commitment to African economies’ development,” said Dr Corneille Karekezi, Group Managing Director / CEO, while reflecting on the Corporation’s journey of half a century.
He added: “As we mark this memorable day, I cordially invite member States, clients, customers and partners to join us in Abuja, Nigeria, on 24 and 25 June 2026 to celebrate our dear Corporation’s exceptional success story and reflect on the role it could play in the future”.
And concluded: “On behalf of the Board of Directors and the entire Africa Re family, I wish to express my sincere gratitude to His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, his Government, and the entire people of Nigeria, for the high-level support and cooperation in hosting our headquarters here in Nigeria and for partnering in our 50th anniversary celebrations”.
Dr Karekezi also expressed gratitude to 42 member states, clients and partners for the trust placed in the Corporation over the years, which has been pivotal to its phenomenal growth.
The two-day celebration will feature the commissioning of the Corporation’s new, futuristic, state-of-the-art Head Office building, as well as a Symposium to reflect on Africa Re’s journey, the future of the African insurance industry, and the continent's economic development.
